Why You Should Consider Replacing Your Windows

There are many reasons a home or business owner may want to upgrade their windows.  The following is a guide to some of the benefits of replacing windows, as well as the types available.

Benefits

Energy efficiency

A lot of energy lost in a home or office setting occurs through windows.  Old windows permit drafts to enter the home.  Advancements in materials have made windows much more effective at keeping the cold air in during the summer and the heat in during the winter.

Attractive Design

Replacement windows are available in variety of styles and can help accent the look of any home or office.  In addition, it can change the exterior appearance of a home.

Less Maintenance

Older windows may require more maintenance.  Older wooden windows require regular maintenance that includes stripping, painting and caulking every couple of years in order to keep them looking good.  There are many low-maintenance replacement window options.

Enhanced Security

Some older windows can be easily forced open.  This makes your home or business a target for potential intruders.  Modern windows may provide a more substantial deterrent for intruders.

Types of Windows

Wood

Wood is the traditional material used for windows.  They are available in a variety of styles and can be elegant and attractive.  Wood can be stained or painted to match the style of the house or office.  There is also a wide range of prices.  Wood does absorb water which means that it can rot or deteriorate if neglected.  It needs regular maintenance.

Vinyl

These windows are virtually maintenance free.  They do not require painting and provide good insulation and are cost effective.  They are also available in a large selection of designs and colors.

Fiberglass

This type of window is very easy to maintain and is extremely durable.  They can also be painted which makes it easy to match the decor of a home or office.

Composite

Composite windows are made of a blend of wood materials and plastics or fiberglass. They look like real wood windows but require little maintenance like the vinyl windows.  They are durable and provide excellent insulation.  They are resistant to moisture and don't rot.

Other factors to consider

Double-pane windows

Double-pane windows use two parallel sheets of glass with an insulating dead air space between them.  This reduces the amount of heat transferred through the window.  The space between the panes is often sealed and filled with inert gas that does not readily conduct heat.  This makes these windows even more efficient.  They are more expensive than single-pane windows.

There are so many options when it comes to window replacement that every home or business owner should find something that meets their needs (from companies like Cheaper Window Glass).

About Me

why professional window installation is important

When I bought my parent's house off of them, the first thing that I wanted to do was remove all of the original windows form the 1950's and replace them with new, energy efficient windows. I started looking into what it was going to take to install the new windows to determine if that was the kind of project that I wanted to take on myself, or if I wanted to hire a professional window installation crew to do it for me. I found out all sorts of things that made me decide that the professional installation of replacement windows was going to be the best way to go.
