Pros And Cons Of Plexiglass Replacement Windows

You are in the process of picking out replacement windows, and you come across units that have plexiglass panels instead of glass. Your curiosity is likely piqued, and plexiglass replacement windows can be a good thing, but they also have a few disadvantages. Here is a look at some of the pros and cons you will want to know.

Pro: The windows are much harder to break

You can find replacement windows made out of plexiglass under the Infinity windows brand name, and the name does say a lot about the resiliency of these products. Plexiglass is extremely hard to break or puncture. If someone were to try to punch through one of these windows to gain access to your home, they would have an extremely difficult time. Likewise, these windows work really well in hurricane zones where there can be a lot of wind-thrown debris. Glass panels do not have that same resiliency to boast.

Con: Plexiglass can sustain scratches easier than glass

Plexiglass is not as solid and dense as regular glass. This plastic material can sustain scratches and scuffs, and it can do so far easier than glass. If there is not a lot of direct contact with your plexiglass windows, you won't have to worry about scratching your windows. However, some homeowners do prefer the resiliency of glass.

Pro: Plexiglass windows can do a good job of being efficient in the summer

Touch your hand to a piece of glass after it has been in the direct path of bright sunlight and you will feel the heat. Glass is very conductive of heat energy, which is one reason why double-paned glass windows are always recommended if you have issues with heat transfer. Plexiglass, on the other hand, does not absorb heat as much as glass. It will stay cooler even if it is in the direct path of hot sunshine. Therefore, if you live in an area that has a lot of high temperatures, replacement windows with plexiglass panels may do a better job of keeping your home cool.

Con: Window panels of plexiglass are a bit harder to clean

If you have plastic and glass cups in your cabinet, you probably already understand why plexiglass windows can be a little harder to keep clean. Plexiglass can be streaked a bit easier and seems to hold onto oils and grime a little more than glass. Therefore, windows that have plexiglass panels may be a little harder to clean.

About Me

why professional window installation is important

When I bought my parent's house off of them, the first thing that I wanted to do was remove all of the original windows form the 1950's and replace them with new, energy efficient windows. I started looking into what it was going to take to install the new windows to determine if that was the kind of project that I wanted to take on myself, or if I wanted to hire a professional window installation crew to do it for me. I found out all sorts of things that made me decide that the professional installation of replacement windows was going to be the best way to go.
